Compress GIF

Reduce GIF file sizes by 60–80% with no visible loss of quality.

How to compress GIF

Drop your GIF files onto the panel above and press Compress. Whole folders are fine, and the results download individually or as one ZIP.

Choose a quality preset before you press it — Balanced suits almost everything — or drag the slider for finer control. Afterwards, drag the before/after divider on the preview to compare the result against the original at full resolution, which is the only reliable way to judge whether a setting cost you anything worth keeping.

Everything runs inside this page as WebAssembly, so your files are never uploaded. That is why there is no size limit and no queue, and why the tool keeps working if you go offline.

How GIF compression works

GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame, and browsers cannot write it at all — so there is no such thing as re-compressing a GIF here. What this tool does is decode the GIF and write a modern format instead, which is almost always what you actually want.

Encoder: libwebp or MozJPEG, depending on the output format you choose.

How much smaller GIF files get

Converting a photographic or gradient-heavy GIF to WebP or JPG commonly cuts 70–90% of the size while also fixing the colour banding the 256-colour palette causes.

Treat it like any other lossy conversion: quality 80 or above for photographs, 90 or above if the GIF contains text or hard-edged graphics.

When to convert instead

Animated GIFs are converted as a still image of the first frame, because none of the writable formats here carry animation. For animation, an MP4 or WebM video is typically 10–20 times smaller than the equivalent GIF — a conversion worth doing with a video tool.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing GIF reduce quality?

At quality 75–85 the difference is imperceptible for photographs, which is what visually lossless means — and the before/after slider lets you verify at full resolution before downloading. Treat it like any other lossy conversion: quality 80 or above for photographs, 90 or above if the GIF contains text or hard-edged graphics.

How do I compress GIF to a KB limit?

Switch Compression to To a file size and type the limit, or start from a page with the target preset: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, or 200 KB. The tool searches quality levels automatically and keeps the best result that fits.
