How to upscale an image
Drop your images onto the panel above, pick 2×, 4×, Full HD, or 4K under Upscale to, and press Upscale. A 960 × 540 image becomes 1920 × 1080 at 2×.
Two things happen to the image, and the second is what makes the difference. First it is enlarged with high-quality bicubic interpolation, which fills the new pixels by averaging their neighbours. That alone always looks soft, because averaging is a blur by definition. So an unsharp mask then restores the edge contrast the enlargement cost, which is the step that makes an upscale read as crisp rather than stretched.
The Sharpen slider controls that second pass and its default suits most photographs. Take it to 0% for a plain bicubic enlargement with no sharpening, or raise it for images with strong edges like text and line art. Images already at or above the target pass through unchanged, because this tool only ever enlarges — to go smaller, use the Resize tool.
How to increase image resolution to 4K
Choose 4K under Upscale to and the long edge is fitted to 3840 pixels, whatever the starting size, with the proportions preserved.
Where the image starts decides how good the result looks. Going from 1920 px to 4K is a 2× enlargement and holds up well, because there is real detail to spread. Going from 640 px is a 6× enlargement, and no amount of sharpening hides that the information was never there. If you have a larger original anywhere — the camera file rather than the copy that came off a messaging app — start from that instead.
Full HD works the same way, fitting the long edge to 1920 px, which is the right target for a full-screen background or a presentation slide. For print, work back from the paper size instead: 300 DPI means a 4 × 6 inch print needs 1200 × 1800 pixels, and anything beyond what the printer resolves is wasted.
Is this an AI photo enhancer?
No. This is deterministic bicubic upscaling with an unsharp mask, not an AI super-resolution model — which is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation.
AI upscalers work by inventing plausible detail: the model has learned what skin, brick, and foliage usually look like, and it paints in texture the original never contained. That is genuinely impressive on holiday photos and genuinely dangerous on anything that has to be accurate, because the detail it adds is a guess. Faces get subtly restructured, and text sharpens into letters that were not the ones on the page.
For document scans, product photos, evidence, and print preparation, a faithful enlargement is worth more than an impressive one — you want the image you photographed, larger. It also means nothing has to download: there is no multi-hundred-megabyte model to fetch, the work happens instantly on your device, and the result is identical every time you run it.
What upscaling can and cannot do
Upscaling spreads the detail an image already has across more pixels. It cannot recover detail that was never captured.
The practical test is what the original looks like at 100%. A sharp 1080p photo upscaled to 4K looks clean and prints noticeably better than the original would have. A blurry photo upscaled to 4K is a larger blurry photo, and the sharpening pass will make the blur crisper rather than removing it. Enlargement is worth doing when the source is sharp and simply too small; it is not a repair tool.
When to upscale an image
Four situations account for almost every enlargement worth doing, and all of them share the same shape: the image is sharp, and something downstream needs more pixels than it has.
Print is the most common. Paper resolves far more detail than a screen, so a photo that looks fine on a monitor can be short of pixels for a 4 × 6 print at 300 DPI. Platform minimums are the next: marketplaces and stock libraries frequently reject anything under 1920 px on the long edge, regardless of how good the photo is. Presentations are a third, where a UI screenshot or diagram blown up on a projector benefits from the sharpening pass keeping text edges clean. The fourth is simply consistency — bringing an old photo library up to a common Full HD or 4K baseline so everything matches.
