How to rotate or flip an image

Flips are separate toggles that combine with the angle in the same pass. Flip Horizontal mirrors left to right, which is the fix for a selfie that reads backwards; Flip Vertical mirrors top to bottom. Fixing a photo that shows up sideways

The reason a photo can look correct on your phone and sideways on a website is that phones usually do not rotate anything when you turn the device. They store the sensor readout as it came and add an EXIF Orientation tag, which is a note attached to the file saying “display me rotated”. Software that reads the tag shows the photo upright. Software that ignores it — older upload forms, some CMS thumbnailers, various desktop utilities — shows you the raw sensor orientation instead.

Rotate, flip, or mirror: which one do you need?
If words in the image read backwards you need a flip. If they read correctly but the image is on its side, you need a rotation.

Flipping reverses the image like a mirror, so any text in it reads backwards. Rotating 180° turns it upside down with the text still the right way round. They look similar on a symmetrical subject and completely different on anything containing words or a recognisable face, so check the preview rather than the label.
Does rotating an image reduce quality?
No. A right-angle rotation maps every pixel to a new position exactly, with no interpolation and no softening whatsoever.
That exactness is why this tool offers only 90° steps. Correcting a 7° tilt is a fundamentally different operation: it has to invent pixel values between the ones you have and then crop away the corners the turn leaves empty, which loses both detail and area. Offering it beside a lossless quarter-turn would imply the two cost the same.
The only change to the pixels comes from re-encoding on download, at quality 90 for lossy formats, which is visually identical for photographs. PNG output stays fully lossless.
