Compress AVIF
Reduce AVIF file sizes by 60–80% with no visible loss of quality.
How to compress AVIF
Drop your AVIF files onto the panel above and press Compress. Whole folders are fine, and the results download individually or as one ZIP.
Choose a quality preset before you press it — Balanced suits almost everything — or drag the slider for finer control. Afterwards, drag the before/after divider on the preview to compare the result against the original at full resolution, which is the only reliable way to judge whether a setting cost you anything worth keeping.
Everything runs inside this page as WebAssembly, so your files are never uploaded. That is why there is no size limit and no queue, and why the tool keeps working if you go offline.
How AVIF compression works
AVIF compression is lossy and derived from the AV1 video codec, which gives it far more sophisticated prediction and transform tools than JPG or WebP have. That is why it produces the smallest files of any widely supported image format.
Encoder: libavif on the AV1 codec, compiled to WebAssembly and run at a faster speed setting so large photos finish in seconds instead of minutes.
How much smaller AVIF files get
AVIF is typically around half the size of a JPG at matched visual quality. Re-compressing an existing AVIF saves less, since the format is already efficient — the large win comes from converting into AVIF rather than compressing within it.
Quality 75–85 is generous for AVIF; it holds together at lower settings than JPG does. Encoding is noticeably slower than other formats, which is normal and not a sign that anything is stuck.
When to convert instead
AVIF support outside browsers is still limited, so keep a JPG or PNG master for print, desktop editing, and anything you will hand to a client.
Frequently asked questions
Does compressing AVIF reduce quality?
At quality 75–85 the difference is imperceptible for photographs, which is what visually lossless means — and the before/after slider lets you verify at full resolution before downloading. How do I compress AVIF to a KB limit?
Switch Compression to To a file size and type the limit, or start from a page with the target preset: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, or 200 KB. The tool searches quality levels automatically and keeps the best result that fits.

Common follow-ups, one click from here. Your image stays on your device between tools.
- Need the file under 50 KB? The compressor's target mode fits any photo below 50 KB automatically — quality first, dimensions only if it must.
- Need the file under 100 KB? The compressor's target mode fits any photo below 100 KB automatically — quality first, dimensions only if it must.
- Dimensions bigger than you need? Resize the pixels down before compressing — it removes more data than any quality setting.
- Would a different format save more? WebP and AVIF are 25–50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality — often the bigger win.
